Amazing food, stunning views (if your by the window) busy place with fast service and great value for the price (lunch time visit) Bookings are by phone only. So we chanced it rocking up towards the start of service hoping to get squeezed in. (Edinburgh at the fringe is busy). The menu has hand written additions/specials, some bin end wines to take advantage off. It was Halloween night at 9:15 p.m. and they were able to find the table for us in 3 minutes. The place was cured and detailed, with a open kitchen and an amazing view on the castle. The service was on point!!! Very kind and efficient. The food choice was huge and all delicious. It is open till 22:30 so pretty convenient!
A local recommended The Outsider to me, and I’m so glad I went! I ordered the steak with fries and a rich drizzled gravy, and it was exactly what I needed after a full day of walking and hiking around Edinburgh. The flavours were spot on and so comforting. The restaurant is usually quite busy, but since I went around 4:30 PM on a Sunday, it was just right, not too crowded, and I got to enjoy the sunset from the window, which made the whole experience even better. The prices are very reasonable for such a popular spot. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the city!
I had a truly wonderful experience here. Stumbled upon the restaurant while I was exploring Edinburgh. Did not have a reservation but staff were very accommodating and found a table for us. We ordered the split pea soup, mussels, olives, and cod. Every dish arrived warm, fresh, delicious, and so beautifully prepared. What I absolutely loved though was the ambiance. Candlelit tables, paper menus with handwritten specials, and a clear attention to detail that made the space feel intimate. Most of all, Lorant took exceptional care of us. Warm, attentive, and genuinely lovely. 10/10 evening.
It was quite late when we arrived, many other restaurants were not letting new people in. After waiting for around 10 minutes we got seated. The food itself tasted good, but served cold… I had two slices of venison on bread pudding and red cabbage with some mushroom, all cold. My partner’s food was warm, but not hot. The dessert was average.
We went to The Outsider for lunch and ordered the coley and the steamed mussels — both dishes were absolutely delicious and very good value for money. The flavours were spot on and the quality of the food really stood out. However, the service was quite slow: it took around 50 minutes for the food to arrive, and the restaurant was very busy and loud, which took away slightly from the experience. That said, the food was genuinely excellent, and I would still recommend it, especially if you’re not in a rush.
Our dinner at The Outsider was flawless from start to finish. The atmosphere is modern and welcoming, and the view of Edinburgh Castle from our table was absolutely breathtaking — reason enough to visit on its own. We ordered the rib eye steak with lemon, garlic butter and black pepper, served with hand-cut chips and a rocket, parmesan & tomato salad – everything was cooked to perfection and beautifully balanced. We also had the steamed mussels, which were incredibly fresh and full of flavor. Every dish exceeded our expectations. What truly elevated the experience, however, was the exceptional service from Aida. From the moment we arrived, she greeted us with a warm smile and made sure we felt genuinely welcome. Her attention to detail, thoughtful recommendations, and kind attitude turned a great dinner into a truly special evening. Thanks to Aida, this meal became one of the highlights of our trip to Edinburgh. If you’re lucky enough to be looked after by her, you’ll know exactly what we mean. Between the delicious food, stunning views, and outstanding hospitality, The Outsider is a must-visit. We can’t wait to return!
4.5 A nice modern space; definitely would be best to sit upstairs or by the window for the view, but we didn’t have a reservation and hardly had any wait time so we were happy to get seated. Food was delicious, but they seemed a bit busy and understaffed. The pan seared fish with risotto was delicious, as was the goat cheese starter.
